What Is the Difference Between Old World and New World Wines?

When you step into Stappa Vineyard, you’re doing so much more than simply grabbing a glass of wine. You are entering a vibrant gathering space designed for connection—a place where the art of winemaking meets the heart of the community. Whether you’re a lifelong connoisseur or just beginning your journey, every pour is an invitation to slow down, share a story, and find your place at our table.
Old World Versus New World Wines
While the terms “Old World” and “New World” might sound strange, they are actually the key to understanding your personal palate. Whether you prefer a rustic, earthy red or a bold, fruit-forward white, knowing the difference helps you explore every bottle.
The Geography of the Vine
At its simplest, the distinction is geographical:
- “Old World” wines come from the birthplaces of viticulture—primarily Europe and parts of North Africa and the Middle East. Think France, Italy, Spain, and Germany. These regions have been perfecting their craft for thousands of years.
- “New World” wines come from everywhere else. These are regions colonized during the age of exploration and beyond, including the United States, Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa.
Terroir vs. Technique
In the “Old World,” the focus is mostly on terroir—the unique combination of soil, climate, and tradition. These wines are often labeled by region (such as Bordeaux or Chianti) rather than by grape variety. The goal is to let the land do the work, often resulting in wines that are lighter in body, higher in acidity, and notably earthy or mineral-driven.
“New World” winemaking, by contrast, is often defined by innovation and expression. In places like California and Connecticut, winemakers have more freedom to experiment. New World wines are typically labeled by the grape (like Cabernet Sauvignon or Chardonnay). Because these regions often have warmer climates, the grapes ripen more fully, leading to wines that are fruit-forward, fuller-bodied, and higher in alcohol.

At Stappa Vineyard, we love the “New World” spirit of Connecticut winemaking, but we deeply respect “Old World” roots.
